Two species of Bembidion subgen. Ocydromus CLAIRVILLE, 1806 from south-western China are here described: B. kaloprosopon sp.n. and B. poli sp.n.

Two new species of Bradybaenus DEJEAN, 1829 (Coleoptera: Carabidae) are here described. Bradybaenus czeppeli sp.n. from Namibia and Botswana and B. robustus sp.n. from Chad are the fourteenth and the fifteenth species of this genus known so far. Habitus and male genitalia of the new taxa and related species are illustrated, and a map with the distribution and systematic notes on other species of the genus are provided.

As a further supplement to the general revision of the Australian-New Guinean carabid subfamily Pseudomorphinae (Coleoptera: Carabidae) the new species Sphallomorpha oculata is described from western New Guinea. The new species belongs to a separate, new species-group (in the sense of the revision) of uncertain relationships and is distinguished at once by the striking pattern of two conspicuous circular reddish elytral spots.

Noterus ponticus SHARP, 1882 (Coleoptera: Noteridae) is redescribed on the base of the male lectotype (herein designated) and the female paralectotype. The species is very close to N. clavicornis (DE GEER, 1774), from which it is easily recognisable by the very fine and poorly impressed punctation on the elytra and a number of other characters. Noterus ponticus is confirmed from western Iran (Khuzestan), while other records for this country must be referred to N. clavicornis. A key, figures of diagnostic characters and a check list are given for the known taxa of Noterus CLAIRVILLE, 1806.

Aquatic beetles in the families Noteridae and Dytiscidae have been collected from aquatic habitats and at light in the southern part of the Comoé National Park (Ivory Coast, West Africa). A total of 12 species of Noteridae in four genera and 95 species of Dytiscidae in 22 genera are recorded; 30 species are reported for the first time from the Ivory Coast. An annoted list of species is presented. Based on literature data the distribution for each species is given, and African records with emphasis on West Africa are listed. Species richness in Comoé National Park is discussed.

The Australian genus Sternopriscus SHARP, 1882 (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae: Hydroporinae) of the subfamily Hydroporinae is revised. All the 14 previously recognised species [S. browni SHARP, 1882, S. clavatus SHARP, 1882, S. hansardi (CLARK, 1862), S. meadfootii (CLARK, 1862), S. marginatus WATTS, 1978, S. minimus LEA, 1898, S. montanus WATTS, 1978, S. multimaculatus (CLARK, 1862), S. mundanus WATTS, 1978, S. signatus SHARP, 1882, S. tarsalis SHARP, 1882, S. tasmanicus SHARP, 1882, S. wattsi PEDERZANI, 2000, S. wehnckei SHARP, 1882] are redescribed and 12 species [S. alligatorensis sp.n., S. alpinus sp.n., S. aquilonaris sp.n., S. balkei sp.n., S. barbarae sp.n., S. goldbergi sp.n., S. mouchampsi sp.n., S. pilbaraensis sp.n., S. storeyi sp.n., S. wallumphilia sp.n., S. weckwerthi sp.n. and S. weiri sp.n.] are described as new. Sternopriscus tarsalis ssp. oscillator SHARP, 1882 is considered to be a synonym of S. tarsalis SHARP, 1882, S. obscurus SHARP, 1882 to be a synonym of S. browni SHARP, 1882, and S. cervus WATTS, 1978 to be a synonym of S. hansardi (CLARK, 1862). A lectotype for S. minimus LEA, 1898 is designated. Monophyly of Sternopriscus is suggested by one apomorphy: Fourth segment of pro- and mesotarsi distinctly visible. The genus is found in all kinds of aquatic habitats and is distributed all over Australia; the southeast, Tasmania and the southwest appear to be centres of speciation. The northern species are mostly rheobiotic, whereas the southern ones occur in all kinds of standing water with some stenotopic peatland species. Important species characters [median lobes, male antennae and colour patterns] are illustrated. A key to all species is provided. The known distribution and ecology of each species is briefly outlined.

New data on the distribution of 13 Palearctic and Nearctic species of Hydroporus CLAIRVILLE (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae) are provided.

The second and third instars of Rhantus formosanus KAMIYA (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae) are described and illustrated. This species has turned out as very similar to other known species of Rhantus DEJEAN in terms of larval morphology except for the presence of natatory setae on coxae. The mature larva of R. formosanus can readily be differentiated from that of the cosmopolitan species R. suturalis (MACLEAY), the only other known species of Rhantus from Taiwan, by the presence of 23 - 27 spinelike setae along the outer margin of urogomphus and its larger size.

A second set of corrections and additions to the "World Catalogue of Dytiscidae" (NILSSON 2001) is given. The species name Colymbetes fenestralis Say, 1823, is declared as a nomen oblitum, in order to ensure the continuous usage of its junior synonym Ilybius biguttulus (GERMAR, 1824) as a valid name (nomen protectum). New taxa described before January 1, 2004 are added. The number of recent species of the family Dytiscidae is now 3892.

Material of Geostiba THOMSON, 1858 from the north of the Iberian Peninsula is revised. Six species are (re-)described and illustrated: G. asturiensis FAGEL, 1967, G. roscidavallensis PACE, 1990, G. ossalensis PACE, 1990, G. melberi sp.n., G. urquillae sp.n., and G. neilae sp.n. Two new synonymies are proposed: G. asturiensis (FAGEL, 1967) = G. covadongaensis (FAGEL, 1967); G. roscidavallensis PACE, 1990 = G. orhyensis PACE, 1990. Additional records of several other species are presented. The distributions of eight species are mapped.

Two species groups and nine species are recognised in the staphylinid genus Myrmecopella KISTNER & MCNAIRN, 1991 (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Aleocharinae: Lomechusini), all of them known only from Sulawesi, Indonesia. Seven species are described: M. talodonis sp.n., M. tengahensis sp.n., M. yamauchii sp.n., M. brendelli sp.n., M. horii sp.n. (M. celebensis group); M. barlowi sp.n., M. utarana sp.n. (M. miricollis group). A new combination is proposed: Myrmecopella miricollis (PACE, 1993) is transferred from Orphnebius MOTSCHULSKY. A supplementary description of the genus and a key to species are given. The systematic position of the genus is discussed and its distribution is mapped.

The paper provides taxonomic, diagnostic, distributional and bionomic data for eleven species of Quedius STEPHENS from the subgenus Raphirus STEPHENS (sensu SMETANA 1971): Q. pseudonigriceps REITTER, 1909; Q. gemellus EPPELSHEIM, 1888; Q. balcanicus BERNHAUER, 1908; Q. boluensis KORGE, 1971; Q. obliqueseriatus EPPELSHEIM, 1889; Q. lgockii ROUBAL, 1911; Q. brachypterus COIFFAIT, 1967; Q. korgeanus FAGEL, 1968; Q. nitipennis STEPHENS, 1832; Q. semiobscurus (MARSHAM, 1802). Geographically it covers the Balkan Peninsula, Asia Minor, the Caucasus and mountains in northern Iran. The subspecies Q. paradisianus korgeanus FAGEL, 1968 is elevated to species level. The following nine new synonymies are established (senior synonym listed first): Q. pseudonigriceps REITTER, 1909 = Q. osellai BORDONI, 1973; Q. gemellus EPPELSHEIM, 1889 = Q. ghilarovi COIFFAIT, 1967 = Q. paramerus COIFFAIT, 1967; Q. cohaesus EPPELSHEIM, 1888 = Q. meurgeusae COIFFAIT, 1977; Q. boluensis KORGE, 1971 = Q. deuvei COIFFAIT, 1978; Q. korgeanus FAGEL, 1968 = Q. svanetianus COIFFAIT, 1969 = Q. orophilus DRUGMAND, 1988; Q. nitipennis STEPHENS, 1832 = Q. acuminatus khnzoriani COIFFAIT, 1967; Q. semiobscurus (MARSHAM, 1802) = Q. rufipes ssp. lutzi Reitter, 1909. Lectotypes are designated for Q. gemellus EPPELSHEIM, 1889; Q. cohaesus EPPELSHEIM, 1888; Q. balcanicus BERNHAUER, 1908; Q. obliqueseriatus EPPELSHEIM, 1889; Q. velutinus MOTSCHULSKY, 1860 and Q. rufipes lutzi REITTER, 1909. The hitherto poorly known species Q. obliqueseriatus, Q. lgockii and Q. brachypterus are redescribed.

Two new species of the Eucibdelus lineage (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Staphylininae) are described: Rhyncocheilus sommersgutteri and Phytolinus hirtus (both from Sichuan, China). The subtle differences between the two genera are shortly discussed and both species are illustrated by color photographs.

The paper provides a critical view on the subtribe Anisolinina (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Staphylininae), including a tentative reclassification. Fourteen genera are currently included in the subtribe, separated into two lineages: Anisolinus lineage (Amichrotus SHARP, Anisolinus SHARP, Hesperoschema SCHEERPELTZ, Hesperosoma SCHEERPELTZ, Misantlius SHARP, Philomyceta CAMERON), and Tympanophorus lineage (Amelinus BERNHAUER, Barygnathus BERNHAUER, Bombylodes FAUVEL, Diatrechus BERNHAUER, Pammegus FAUVEL, Tolmerinus BERNHAUER, Turgiditarsus SCHILLHAMMER, Tympanophorus NORDMANN). Nine new species are described: Hesperosoma britakaiserae (Nepal), H. flavoterminale (China), H. klapperichi (China), H. meghalayense (India), H. mishmiense (India), H. puetzi (China), Hesperoschema sauteri (Taiwan), Misantlius pecki (Vietnam) and M. sikkimensis (India). The subgenus Paramichrotus NAOMI of Hesperosoma is reestablished. New synonymies: Paramichrotus NAOMI (= Hemihesperosoma HAYASHI syn.n.); Philomyceta CAMERON (= Montguillonius COIFFAIT syn.n.); Barygnathus BERNHAUER (= Pseudodysanellus HAYASHI syn.n.). New reliable records are provided for Hesperosoma excellens (BERNHAUER). The genus Misantlius is recorded for the first time from Asia. Keys to genera of the Anisolinus lineage and to species of Hesperosoma s.str. are provided. Photographs show the habitus and body details of selected species. The aedeagi of all new and some already described species are illustrated.

The Nearctic featherwing beetle Bambara fusca (DYBAS, 1966) and the pantropical B. contorta (DYBAS, 1966) are reported from north-western Germany, being the first European records of the genus Bambara VUILLET, 1911 (Coleoptera: Ptiliidae). They are regarded as recent immigrants, possibly introduced by the import of sawmill products. Diagnostic characters are briefly described, illustrated and keyed, and an extension of the key to the Central European genera of Ptiliidae by BESUCHET (1971) is given. The 14 Bambara species of the world are tabulated with their distribution known so far. Previous introductions of 11 further ptiliid species into Europe are summarized and discussed and the oldest known records, or the references referring to such, are accounted for. Parthenogenesis by European species of Ptiliidae is shown to be statistically highly correlated with immigration (P‹0.001) and, thus, a powerful tool for dispersal. Ptinella johnsoni RUTANEN is reported from Norway, Baeocrara japonica (MATTHEWS) from Belarus and Slovakia, and Acrotrichis insularis (MÄKLIN) from the Czech Republic for the first time.

The genus Anacaena THOMSON (Coleoptera: Hydrophilidae) is redescribed. The hitherto known five species are redescribed and nine new species, A. angulata, A. fallax, A. glabriventris, A. gracilipalpis, A. lutea, A. parvicristata, A. polita, A. reducta, and A. sucinea, from the Afrotropical Region are described. A key to the Afrotropical species is given.

The genus Enochrus THOMSON is reviewed for the West Indies. Nine species in two subgenera are recorded from the region: Enochrus (Methydrus) bartletti and E. (M.) punctipalpus are described as new and illustrated; E. (M.) sayi is newly recorded from the region, and additional distributional information is provided for E. (M.) pseudochraceus, E. (M.) pygmaeus, E. (M.) ochraceus, E. (Lumetus) hamiltoni, and E. (L.) reflexipennis. Previous records of a tenth species, E. (M.) debilis, may refer to E. (M.) bartletti sp.n. A key to the Enochrus of the West Indies is presented.

The Central American species of Hydrobiomorpha BLACKBURN (Coleoptera: Hydrophilidae) are reviewed. The recorded fauna includes Hydrobiomorpha casta (SAY), H. phallica (d'ORCHYMONT), and H. naviga sp.n., which is described and illustrated from Costa Rica. A key is provided to allow identification of the three New World species of the genus exclusive of South America.

The karyotypes of Aphodius (Acrossus) depressus (KUGENANN), A. (A.) luridus (F.) and A. (A.) rufipes (L.), A. (Nimbus) contaminatus (HERBST) and A. (N.) obliteratus PANZER, and A. (Chilothorax) conspurcatus (L.), A. (C.) distinctus (O.F. MÜLLER), A. (C.) lineolatus ILLIGER, A. (C.) paykulli BEDEL and A. (C.) sticticus (PANZER) are described and illustrated. In all cases the karyotypes comprise nine pairs of autosomes and sex chromosomes which are Xy (male), XX (female). The karyotypes of all the species are distinctive, but give no clues to the taxonomic groupings of the species. No chromosome polymorphism has been detected.

Three new flightless species of Philharmostes KOLBE (Coleoptera: Ceratocanthidae) are described from the Eastern Arc rainforests of Tanzania: P. grebennikovi (West Usambara Mts.), P. ornatus (Uluguru Mts.), and P. pseudumbratilis (West Usambara Mts.). Philharmostes grebennikovi is especially remarkable since it is the smallest known Ceratocanthidae and is quite distinct from East African Philharmostes, and more similar to the South African representatives of this genus.

Five new species of the genus Trichobyrrhulus GANGLBAUER, 1902 (Coleoptera: Byrrhidae) from Spain are described: Trichobyrrhulus assingi sp.n. (Sierra de Segura), T. franzi sp.n. (Serra, Valencia), T. nevadensis sp.n. (Sierra Nevada), T. rondaensis sp.n. (Sierra de Ronda) and T. wunderlei sp.n. (Sierra de Segura). New records of Trichobyrrhulus-species from Spain are presented. Distinguishing characters are illustrated.

A new intertidal beetle, Hyphalus madli sp.n. (Coleoptera: Limnichidae, Hyphalinae), is described from Silhouette Island (Seychelles) and compared with H. crowsoni HERNANDO & RIBERA from the Aldabra Atoll (Seychelles). This is the second species of the genus Hyphalus BRITTON from the Indian Ocean.

Anatolobrium eggeri gen.n. et sp.n., a new genus and species of the tribe Obriini (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), is described from southern Turkey (Antalya Province).

A key to the species of the genus Labaninus MORIMOTO of the world (Part I) with descriptions of six new taxa and review of one known species is presented. The following new taxa are described: L. basofasciatus sp.n., L. beverlyae sp.n., L. bicolor sp.n., L. meregallii sp.n. L. reticulopunctatus sp.n., and L. sexmaculata sp.n. The known taxon in this group is presented with a short review: L. confluens KWON & LEE. The characteristics that define the L. confluens group are the following: metafemur does not exceed apex of the elytra and the rostrum gradually emerges from the frons.

The genus Hellerrhinus MARSHALL (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is represented by several species in New Guinea. Two new species have been discovered in material of the Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet Stockholm. They are included in a previous key of the genus.

Faunistic data of five rare or little known species from Austria are provided. One species of Latridiidae (Melanophthalma fuscipennis MANNERHEIM), one species of Bothrideridae (Anommatus diecki REITTER) and one species of Nitidulidae (Meligethes matronalis AUDISIO & SPORNRAFT) are recorded from Austria for the first time. New provincial record: Latridiidae: Corticaria polypori SAHLBERG (Lower Austria).
